Can you communicate with another computer that acts as a diagnostic server?
If you cannot use the Net Diagnostics tool to communicate with a computer that acts as a diagnostic server, your network connectivity problem is most likely a hardware-related issue.
Note
- To communicate with another computer that is acting as a diagnostic server, complete both of the procedures below.
To set up a computer as a diagnostic server using the Net Diagnostics tool
Verify that your computer has the NetBEUI or the IPX/SPX-compatible protocol installed, and if needed, install at least one of them.
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
If at least one of the two protocols listed above is installed, continue to step 2. Otherwise, click Add, click Protocol, and then click Add.
Click Microsoft, click either NetBEUI or IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol, click OK, and then click OK.
Press and hold down the CTRL key as the computer starts, and then choose Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu.
At the command prompt, type net diag, and then press ENTER.
Windows 98 responds with a list of the detected protocols. Press the key for the protocol you want to use for testing.
Windows 98 searches for a diagnostic server on the network. If it does not find a diagnostic server, it gives you the option to enable the computer to act as a diagnostic server.
To communicate with the computer that is acting as a diagnostic server
Type net diag at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
Windows 98 responds with a list of the detected protocols. Press the key for the protocol you chose in step 4 above.

WINDOWS 98 COMMON ANNOYANCES:
Can I make a link to Windows 98 Annoyances?
All of my desktop icons just became corrupted - what do I do?
Restart your computer in MS-DOS mode (or just Exit Windows).
Delete the file ShellIconCache in your Windows 98 directory, and restart (note that it's hidden, so you'll have to show hidden files to find it).
Why can't I start Windows 98 when I boot from a floppy?
When you use Windows 98 to make a startup or "boot" diskette, it isn't complete. Copy the file MSDOS.SYS from the root directory of your hard disk onto the floppy, and reboot. This file tells DOS where your Windows 98 directory is located.
How do I stop Internet Explorer from loading a "home page" when it starts?
Right-click on the shortcut for Internet Explorer, and select Properties.
Click on the Shortcut tab, and include a space followed by -nohome after IEXPLORER.EXE in the Target field.
My Taskbar has disappeared - how do I get it back?
Move the mouse to the bottom of the screen until the mouse cursor looks like you're about to resize something.
Stretch the Taskbar up, so that it is visible.
Note: this is the most commonly asked question by new users of Windows 98.
To do this with the keyboard, type Ctrl-ESC, Alt-Space, S, and then use the Up Arrow to resize the taskbar.
Restart Windows without Restarting your Computer
Choosing Shut Down from the Start Menu gives you several choices, including restarting your computer. However, to restart Windows without restarting your computer, saving time and aggravation, follow this step:
One time:
Hold down the Shift key while pressing OK in the Shut Down box.
To make an icon on your desktop:
Using a text editor (such as Notepad), type the following by itself:
Save the file somewhere on your hard disk - call it whatever you like, as long as it has the extension .bat.
Make a shortcut to the batch file, and place it on your desktop (or wherever you want).
Right-click on the shortcut, select Properties, click the Program tab, and make sure the Close on Exit option is turned on.
Then, click Advanced, and make sure MS-DOS mode is selected, and Warn before entering MS-DOS mode is turned off.
Click Ok twice, and double-click on the icon to use it.
This functionality is also available in the Windows interface enhancement, Route 1 Pro.
How do I display the date in the Tray (next to the clock)?
Download and install TrayDate (21 kb). Note that you can also hold your mouse cursor over the clock for more than a second, and the date will appear temporarily.
Get Rid of the Logon Screen
Whether or not you're on a local area network, odds are you don't really need the little logon (login) screen asking for your username and password that comes up when starting Windows 98. To remove this prompt, follow the following directions:
If you don't have multiple users configured:
Open Control Panel, and double-click on the Network icon.
From the list entitled Primary Network Logon:, choose Windows Logon, and press OK.
Note: If this doesn't work, make sure you didn't initially configure a password for yourself. If you did, Windows 98 will always require it. Double-click on the Passwords icon in Control Panel to choose nothing (leave it blank) for your password.
If you do have multiple users configured:
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Network\ Logon.
Double-click on the Process Logon Script value, and change the data from 00 00 00 00 to 00 00 00 01
If nothing else works:
Install Tweak UI, and double-click the Tweak UI icon in Control Panel.
Choose the Network tab, and check the Log on automatically at system startup option.
Type your username (shown after Log Off in your Start Menu) and your password (leave it blank if you don't have one), and click Ok when you're done.

What to do about error messages during Windows startup
You may have seen a strange message when Windows 98 is loading. This can be caused by many different things, but here are the usual culprits:
A file can't be found: A driver or progam is configured to load when Windows 98 starts, but the file is either corrupt or missing. Usually this means that you need to reinstall the driver or application, or remove the reference (if the respective device or application has been removed).
A driver won't load: This could either be that the driver is corrupted, or the device which the driver controls isn't functioning properly. This could also be due to a Hardware Conflict.
The following are places that files or drivers can be specified to load when Windows 98 starts. Often simply removing the reference to the file solves the problem - at the very least, locating the driver will help determine the culprit.
Look in your Startup folder (usually found in your Start Menu folder) for outdated or unwanted shortcuts.
Older programs might still install themselves in your WIN.INI file (on the same line that starts with "LOAD="). Use Notepad to edit this file.
Search your Registry for the filename; try looking in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Run for a place to start.
Some older drivers are loaded in your SYSTEM.INI file (use Notepad to edit this file).
Programs notorious for putting things in these places include backup utilities that automatically load their useless scheduler programs, and the software that comes with older versions of Micrsoft mice and keyboards.
Getting Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers
Ever connected a computer to your network, and cursed at Windows because it doesn't show up in Network Neighborhood like it's supposed to? While this is a common problem, there are solutions. (Note - the following assumes that networking has already been set up and is functioning properly.)
Check the cables and make sure all the lights (if any) on your hub and network cards are lit. A lit light means that the cables are properly hooked up.
Open Network Neighborhood (on any computer), and press the F5 key repeatedly to refresh the display. More than 5 or 6 times is unnecessary.
Try closimg Explorer and re-opening it. Do this on the computer that was just connected, and on a computer you know is working.
Select Toolbars from Explorer's View menu, and if Address Bar is not checked, select it. In the address bar toolbar, type two backslashes followed by the name of the computer that won't show up (or if you're on that computer, the name of any other computer). Example: \\server or \\bigboy.
As a last resort, restart the computer that won't show up on the network. If that doesn't work, there's something wrong with your network setup.

If replacing the System.dat file with the System.1st file solves the problem, the problem may have been related to registry damage. To update the new registry, reinstall the programs and device drivers that you added after you first installed Windows 98.
If replacing the System.dat file with the System.1st file did not solve the problem, restore the original registry.
To restore the original registry
Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode.
Type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each line:
c:\windows\command\attrib -s -h -r c:\windows\system.dat

Subject: re: Win freezes on initial splash screen
In response to: Win freezes on initial splash screen (Andy Bodger: Fri, 11 Jun, 1999 - 14:33)
Same chip/board I have......I can tell you how to get
rid of the logo screens and that might at least help
you figure out what is locking the system on boot up.
I do it for that reason.....if something happens on
bootup then I know what/where it froze. You have
to open/edit the msdos.sys on your root directory (c:\)
It will have the +h attirbute (hidden file) so change that
in explorer or dos (attrib -h -r -s msdos.sys) and edit it. Look
for the following section:
[Options]
BootMulti=0
BootGUI=1
DoubleBuffer=1
AutoScan=1
WinVer=4.10.1998
Logo=0
add the above "Logo=o" line and save. Change the
attribute back to hidden and reboot. Then watch
your bootup and see if you can spot where it's happening.
If that doesn't help...hit F8 when it's booting up (when
it says "starting windows 98...." and do the step through
boot up where you can watch as it loads each thing individually.

WINDOWS HANG UPON SHUT DOWN:
When I choose "Shut Down" from the Start Menu, my computer hangs at the "Please Wait" screen
Most likely, one or more of your is not allowing itself to be unloaded.
Now, supposedly, Microsoft has changed Windows 98 so that drivers are no longer unloaded when you shut down (which was always unnecessary). While this helps matters, this shut-down hang still happens.
Try hitting Enter when it hangs to "wake it up."
Try holding Shift while clicking Ok in the "Shut Down" dialog in Windows 98 - this might allow you to shut down faster, and bypass whatever is causing your system to hang.
This can also happen if the sound file for Shutdown becomes corrupted. Double-click on the Sounds icon in Control Panel and remove or change the sound event for Shutdown
